Excitement anticipated as Markets countrywide gear up for action
Sixteen teams drawn from Municipal Markets across the country will compete for honours when O’Neil Durant, in association with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), stages the 4th edition of the Inter Market knockout football competition at the Banks DIH ground, Thirst Park, starting on Monday July 29. Over $375,000 will be at stake with the winners carting off the lion’s share of $150,000. The runners up will take home $100,000 while the third and fourth place finishers will collect $75,000 and $50,000, respectively. There will also be prizes for the most prolific goal scorer, most valuable player and best goalkeeper while a special prize would also be at stake for the competitor who demonstrates remarkable fair play.
The organizers have convened a press conference for the Banks DIH Boardroom at 15:00hrs today to update the media of other matters pertaining to the successful staging of the tournament.
Defending champions, LaPenitence Market, are reportedly training very hard but would have to be at the top of their game if they are to repeat last year’s winning performance. Reports are that all of the other teams are also applying themselves to a rigorous training regiment with an aim of carting off the honours. The competition would be played on a knockout basis, over an eight-day period.
The Inter-market competition is the brainchild of Durant and Michael Vanderstoop and was inaugurated in 2003. The tournament has provided much excitement and thrills for football buffs over the years. Eight markets had competed for honours in the inaugural tournament and Kitty Market had walked away with the spoils. The East Ruimveldt Market then won the second edition with LaPenitence Market winning the third.
This year all of the teams have heightened their preparations and a hard fought battle is envisaged.
The markets competing for this year’s first prize are; LaPenitence, Parika, Kitty, Stabroek, Bourda, East Ruimveldt, Wales, Lenora/Stewartville, New Amsterdam, Wismar, Plaisance, Buxton and Golden Grove. Other teams vying for the first prize are, Merriman’s Mall and the Vendor’s Arcade.
