Rajmangal rejoins encampment
By Sean Devers
Demerara youth captain, Rajendra Naikbarran could miss this year’s TCL regional Under-19 cricket series in Jamaica if he does not sufficiently recover from an illness, which has ruled him out of action until July 2.
The Guyanese are scheduled to break camp on that day, before departing for Jamaica on July 7, where they face the Leeward Islands in their opening three-day game from July 9.
The late request for the use of the Police Sports Club ground for a practice session yesterday resulted in the pitch not being prepared, but the venue will host a three-day practice game between the National Colts and a Rest combination from 10:00hrs today.
Yesterday the players did physical and fielding drills before doing some ‘short knocks’ on the Police ground.
Manager Alvin Johnson said the players were all looking forward to their first turf session in the match today after concentrating on the physical aspects of their preparation over the last few weeks.
Johnson informed that Naikbarran, one of the 14 chosen for the Jamaica trip, was not among those present when the camp began in the city last Friday evening, adding that the youngster has produced a medical covering him for 14 days from June 19.
“This is a disappointment since Rajendra was one of the players picked in the 14-man squad to travel and since he will not be ready for any cricket until the day we break camp, I am concerned that he is missing vital pre-tournament preparation, which involves the cricket itself,” Johnson told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
Johnson explained that he had already informed the Guyana Cricket Board about this development and said that if Naikbarran is unable to make the trip one of the stand-by players will be drafted into the touring squad.
Johnson informed that stand-by Ryan Rajmangal, who left the camp after the touring party and 6 stand-by players were announced, was allowed to rejoin the squad on Monday evening after a meeting at the encampment base at the GCB Hostel.
GRASS PRACTICE! Jonathon Foo bats against Andre Stoll as the Guyana U-19 cricketers had to resort to ‘shot knocks’ on the grass at the Police ground.
It is not clear why Rajmangal left the camp, but it is understood that he claimed he was unwell when he returned.
West Indies left-hander Leon Johnson, National First-Class players Chris Barnwell, Steven Jacobs along with former Guyana Under-19 players Kelon Carmichael and Trinidad based Andrew Lyght Junior are all members of the Rest team for today’s match.
Six players from the encampment squad will play for the Rest team. Another three-day practice match is scheduled from next week Tuesday.
Johnson, the National Under-19 team manager since 2003, says he is hoping to have Guyana senior team bowlers Brandon Bess, Veerasammy Permaul and Davendra Bishoo included in the Rest team for the next practice match once their inclusion is approved by the GCB.
