Guyanese athletes relegated one of the Caribbean’s most successful distance runners, the durable Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’, Pamenos Ballantyne, yesterday in the Toyota 5k Road Run in Tobago.
Kelvin Johnson
Kelvin Johnson won the race in 16:30 seconds while Lionel D’Andrade finished second in 17:11 before Trinidadian, Elvis Turner (17:15) prevented Dennis Horatio (17:19) from a clean sweep of the top three places.
Ballantyne finished a rare fifth in 17:38. He is an eight-time winner of the Trinidad and Tobago Marathon, an Olympian and International campaigner. Ballantyne also placed second to Cleveland Forde in Guyana last year.
The Guyanese athletes lamented the difficulty of the hilly terrain, but were pleased with the performances, while speaking briefly to Kaieteur Sport yesterday. “We all did well. We knew it was hard but we did well,” they said.
Lionel D
The trio is continuing preparations for the half marathon event of the Caribbean Games, where they hope to make an indelible mark. It is unlikely that they will compete in other events, because of stringent qualification standards.
