The semi-finalist’s of the 2nd annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet 16 knock-out competition has been decided.
Only one of the final two quarter-final matches was played on Saturday night at the Plaisance Community Centre ground, Pele, failing to show up after lodging a protest complaining about the playing surface and the quality of the lights at the venue.
Their no show gifted Alpha United a place in the semi-final against the Guyana Defence Force tomorrow.
In the lone game, Cougars turned back the challenge of Bakewell Buxton Stars 3-2 in an exciting duel. Buxton could not make good on their second chance in the tournament, replacing GFC who were booted out for playing an unregistered player. Buxton were hammered by GFC 4-1.
They jumped into the lead against the Berbice based Cougars in the 8th minute via a Kwame Moffatt goal but were unable to deny the team from the Ancient County. They stormed back in style to equalize in the 27th minute through a Kirth Bristol goal.
Cougars took the lead four minutes before half time from the penalty spot, Hubern Angus, the man on target.
An Owen Bobb strike in the 78th minute saw Buxton drawing level, but with 4 minutes remaining to full time, Horace Roache and Cougars would have noting to do with extra time, his shot ripping the nets for the winner.
Cougars will now face defending champions Sunburst Camptown in the other semi-final tomorrow. A slot in the championship match awaits the respective winners.
