McKinnon’s 19th minute strike sends Camptown to final

Telston McKinnon’s bundled in goal in the 19th minute was what separated Camptown from hosts Fruta Conquerors in their semi-final clash of the Banks Premium Beer Knock-out Cup which was played last Sunday evening, at the Tucville ground.

The result meant that they now await the winner of the rescheduled clash between the Guyana Defence Force and Alpha United which had to be push back due to the late return of a few players from Haiti following Alpha’s rematch against Tempete FC in their CFU Club Champions Cup.
McKinnon took advantage of Conquerors goalkeeper Oswald Cornette’s poor attempt to clutch a cross from the right side, before lashing in his effort from close range much to the consternation of the home-team supporters.

Played before a fair-sized crowd, both teams struggled to keep control of the ball, with poor passing the order of the day and very little threatening raids on goal.
McKinnon’s goal in the first period was the only real highlight as they kept a 1-0 lead at the half.
On the resumption, right back Gerald Gritten provided Camptown’s custodian Richie Richards with his sternest test, floating an exquisite cross that had the latter scrambling to parry over the crossbar.

After that the same pattern that dominated the opening period resurfaced as the two teams produced some lacklustre build-ups that rarely seemed intent on scoring. However, on one rare occasion, Delon Williams hammered a fierce shot on goal, but Richards was equal to the task, making a wonderful save that ensured Camptown kept their advantage.
In the end, no team was able to penetrate the air-tight defences, allowing Camptown’s progression to the final.
