Top face bottom from today at Jarette Park when repeat Champions Jamaica battle bottom-placed Guyana in the 13th round of the WICB regional four-day cricket series from 10:00hrs (11:00hrs Guyana time).
Guyana, inspired by an improved performance in their last game in Trinidad when they got first innings points from the host in a drawn game, aim to upset Jamaica in their backyard and will hope that the Jamaicans, with an unassailable 94 points, show complacency after retaining their title with a match in hand
A win for Guyana, who have another game (against Barbados at Providence) will aid in their bid to try and overtake CCC (who also have one more game after this round) on the points table to avoid finishing last.
This game also provides Narsingh Deonarine, who has enjoyed a prolific season to become the first batsman to reach 1,000 runs in a regional season and a West Indies re-call for month-end’s West Indies tour to England.
The elegant left-hander who has played four Tests but none since 2005, need another 50 runs to cross the 1,000-run barrier and so far has registered five fifties and two centuries including a career-best 198 against CCC at Bourda.
CCC’s Floyd Reifer (902) and in-form Leewards’ batsman Runako Morton (851) are the only other batsmen with 800 runs this season. Stuart Williams’s 974 from eight games in 2002 have the most runs scored in a regional first-class season, to date.
Skipper Travis Dowlin and Royston Crandon have offered resistance and Assad Fudadin has looked good since his return to the side.
Wicket Keeper Derwin Christian’s cricket and fitness level have regressed as the season has progressed while the inconsistency of Sewnarine Chattergoon and Leon Johnson is a cause for major concern in the Guyana camp as the South Americans do battle on what should be a track with some pace and bounce.
Chris Barnwell, despite the burden of opening both bowling and batting has done very well in both departments and will hope to add to his two fifties this season as Guyana look for a solid foundation from the openers.
Steven Jacobs finally did his batting talent some justice with a maiden fifty in the last match and his improving off-spin bowling has been used successfully to keep one end ‘tight’ as the specialist spinners Davendra Bishoo (30 scalps) and Veerasammy Permaul do the bulk of the work for Guyana with the ball.
The most encouraging sign of improvement in Trinidad was the impressive work with the new ball from Brandon Bess, who although still bowled with pace, added the control that was missing for most of the season to his armory and troubled the T&T top order.
New Coach Rabindranauth Seeram has struggled tactically with a young side and Deonarine apart, nobody has been able to compile big totals, but for a team unable to get out of the cellar position after 10 matches, the team spirit and desire to do well in the team is very high.
Jamaica should be coming out with all guns blazing since they know that after their defeat to the Windwards in their last game, they must be at their best in their final game.
The hosts will depend on discarded West Indies Keeper Carlton Baugh who returned to the team with two centuries and two fifties from four matches to finish the tournament with another big score while Tamar Lambert, Wavell Hinds, Brenton Parchment, Donavan Pagon, David Bernard and West Indies left-hander Brandon Nash will offer support with the bat.
Leg-spinner Odean Brown is three wickets away from joining Shane Shillingford who has 51 wickets and Mahendra Nagamootoo (50 from nine games in 2002) as the only bowlers with 50 wickets in a season and could do the bulk of the bowling for the Jamaicans.
