Nicolette Fernandes and Victoria Lust registered stunning results to gatecrash the semi-finals of the Forexx Eindhoven Open 2009 Squash championships last week.
In her first tournament since April 2007, the 25-year old Fernandes came back from 2-1 down to beat fourth seeded Celia Allamargot from France 11-9 in the fifth and final game.
The former world number 27, who was forced out of the game for nearly 2 years with a serious knee injury, now faces another surprise semi finalist in the fast improving Victoria Lust.
The 19-year old from England ousted Manuela Manetta in a 67-minute match, winning three tiebreaks to score a notable upset over the event’s number two seed: 6-11, 17-15, 12-10, 12-10.
Fernandes made a successful comeback during the Forexx Eindhoven Open 2009 after a 23-month absence due to injury.
The 25-year old Guyanese defeated Dutch junior Cigany Sillevis in qualifying, before ousting Swedish ace Anna-Carin Forstadius, seeded six, in the first round.
Fernandes, who last came into action during the Qatar Classic of April 2007 before suffering her long term knee injury, now hopes to advance and capture the title. (Tommy Berden)
