Reifer (72), Smith (56) gave CCC upper hand against Guyana

Floyd Reifer (72) and Jamal Smith (56) shared in a responsible 126-run fifth wicket partnership to gave Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) the upper-hand against Guyana on the opening day of their ninth round WICB regional four-day cricket match at Bourda yesterday.
Reifer, a former Test left-hander stroked 10 fours and two sixes in his innings while Smith’s half-century included six fours to help CCC to 254 all out on a flat track after they had won the toss.
By the close, Guyana needing to bat nine overs were 24-2 with West Indies batmen Sewnarine Chattergoon (2) and Leon Johnson (1) at the crease and their team still 231 runs away from first innings points.
Chris Barnwell (14) and night watchman Veerasammy Permaul (0) fell within the space of a run to leave Guyana on 20-2, after which Chattergoon, dropped at square leg off pacer Kevin McLean before he had scored, along with Johnson, saw their team to the close.
Earlier, CCC won the toss and after losing Skipper Simon Jackson (0) at 5-1, recovered to reach 69-2 when Kyle Corbin (40) was taken at slip off Barnwell.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who finished with 4-72, got rid of Chadwick Walton for a duck at 72-3 while Nikolai Parris (20) edged a catch to slip off Barnwell who took 2-42 to leave the students on 88-4.
By Lunch CCC, who beat Guyana in Barbados in the first half of the ‘Double round’ tournament, were 105-4 with Reifer on 23 and Smith on 10.
The pair, aided by indifferent bowling, batted sensibly as Guyana failed to pick up a wicket in the second session. By Tea the visitors had reached 206-4 with Reifer on 70 and Smith, (who played within his limitations and offered level-headed support to the elegant Reifer) on 50.
Once Smith and Reifer were removed in quick succession just after tea with the score on 214, the Guyanese wrapped up the innings by 16:22hrs although McLean (17) and Boris Hutchinson (13) hit a few lusty blows.
Pacer Brandon Bess was again expensive in a wayward seven-over spell which cost 55 runs and included nine no-balls and eight wides while off-spinners Steven Jacobs (1-49 from 21 overs) and Narsingh Deonarine (1-20 from 8.3 overs) were steady without being destructive in sultry conditions.
Guyana left out Shemroy Barrington and Trevon Garraway from their team while Guyanese pacer Gilford Moore was not included in CCC’s final eleven. Play continues today from 10:00hrs. Scores: CCC 254; Guyana 24-2.
