Reigning National Champion Kriskal Persaud maintained excellent form on the final day of the DDL/Topco Juice Mash Chess Tournament held last Sunday at the YMCA, Thomas Lands to claim the title but not without a battle. Persaud started the day with a solid victory against veteran player Errol Tiwari. The game of the day however, belonged to the Junior National Champion Taffin Khan as he demolished the Senior National Champion Kriskal Persaud in a convincing manner. Persaud found himself under immense pressure as several serious attacks came from Khan and he lost pieces trying to fend off the attack and found himself down three pieces, before eventually resigning.
In the last round of the day Taffin Khan also defeated this father David Khan. Taffin Khan’s only loss came against Errol Tiwari.
The final points standing; Kriskal Persaud and Taffin Khan six (Persaud won on a better tie break average) Shiv Nandalall five, Errol Tiwari, David Khan and Chino Chung four and a half, Learie Webster, Omar Shariff, Craig Sylvester and Michael Perreira four, Brian Thompson three and a half, Irshad Mohamed, Kenrick Braithwaite, Dennis Dillon, Sherlock Atwell and Donald Perreira three, Everton London and Haatram Parbat two and a half, Alex Joseph two, Raymond Sookdeo and David Brush on one point.
In the junior category, Sham Khan took the top prize, finishing with five and a half points followed by Devendra Singh and Khalid Gajraj five, Sheriffa Ali, Clive Bender and Imran Shaw four and a half, Denzil Dillon two, Nicholas Stephney one and a half, Stanley Ming one and Irshad Ishmael on half of a point.
The tournament was sponsored exclusively by DDL under the Topco Juice Brand. Prizes were given to the top four seniors and top three juniors. General Manager Loris Nathoo made the presentation to the winners.
