RHTY&SC provide cricket balls for 13 Berbice clubs
Initiative is part of club’s Cricket Development Programme

Thirteen (13) cricket clubs in Berbice were the recipients of $405,000 worth of cricket balls compliments of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club in association with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
The presentation coincided with the launching of the club’s Cricket Development Programme and took place at the Area ‘H’ ground.
The clubs benefiting were West Berbice, Blairmont, Bermine, Police, Young Warriors, Rose Hall Canje, Chesney, Rose Hall Town, Whim, Kildonan, Scotsburg and Skeldon. They were each presented with 18 balls while the newly reformed Mount Sinai Cricket Club, making a comeback after an absence of 25-years, received six and one pair of batting pads.
Club Secretary / CEO Hilbert Foster noted that the RHTY&SC over the last 15 years has invested millions of dollars in assisting over 70 sports clubs in Berbice in an effort to make sure that the youths in the Ancient County have access to sports.
He declared that sport is one of the major avenues that can be used to keep youths away from drugs and crime.
Foster proudly affirmed that the RHTY&SC is the only club in Guyana and even the Caribbean that reaches out to its competitors on the cricket field because it wants all cricket clubs in Berbice to be at the same level in an effort to return cricket in the county to the hey days of the past.
“One of our main donors, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in January this year agreed to partner with us in this programme and approved a substantial grant to purchase sports equipment. A total of $405,000 was used to purchase cricket balls while the remaining $395,200 would be used to purchase sports equipment for schools in the Lower Corentyne area.”
Referring to the Church as an ‘Angel of Hope’, Foster thanked them for their collaboration in assisting youths in Berbice.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board of Control who also holds the similar post with the RHTY&SC, Keith Foster, hailed the donation to the clubs as timely since the cost of playing cricket was quite high.
The President stated that with the 2009 Berbice Cricket season expected to be very hectic, some clubs would find it very hard to finance the entire season and as such the donation would be of great assistance.
Berbice Cricket, he said, was undergoing rapid development and challenged club leaders to accept excellence as their only benchmark.
Elder Whitehead, speaking on behalf of the Church, shared that they were delighted to be part of the programme which targets getting young people off the road and involved in sports.
“We are proud to be associated with the RHTY&SC because of their high standard of work and ability to get things done well.”
Whitehead called on the representatives of the clubs and the BCBC to continue the good work they are doing and to always set the right example for youths to follow.
D. Somwaru of Chesney and Linden Murray of Skeldon speaking on behalf of the clubs, expressed thanks to the RHTYSC and the donor for the equpment.
Somwaru stated that with so much cricket to be played in 2009, the clubs was grateful for the balls while Murray confirmed that it was another noble step of the RHTY&SC to assist its competitors in these challenging financial times.
Both club leaders also noted that only last November they received a large amount of balls from the RHTY&SC under the Basil Butcher Trust Fund.
