Disclose the cost-benefit analysis of these projects
Dear Editor,
I want to air a small concern with the Budget; in it sums of monies are allocated for the building of aircraft runways on Wakenaam and Leguan.
Did the people of these two islands request these?
Isn’t Leguan two minutes by speed boat from Wakenaam?
Isn’t Wakenaam five minutes away from an existing runway at Spring Garden?
Who would benefit: the working class (the majority)?
The cost-benefit analysis of these projects would make interesting reading; could the Minister make same available so we the Guyanese public, especially the islanders affected, would appreciate the value to society that these bring and hence grow a sense of responsibility for the runways’ health and upkeep.
When runways are built in the inaccessible interior, settlements are created and economic activities are born, Guyana becomes richer socially and financially; these would have the opposite effect since they will emphasise the gap between the rich and poor and secondly will occupy arable lands.
Having written the above we the people know “Pork” (borrowing a phrase used by American TV) when we see it. The shame is not on us the masses.
