February 23 commemorates the anniversary of Guyana becoming a sovereign democratic state within the British Commonwealth in 1970.
This year the theme for Republic Day is “One Dream, One Celebration, One Design in 2009.” The dream of our nation is to fulfill the chattels of success and progress to help other like-minded nations.
Today, there are signs of this dream becoming a reality evidenced through increased development.
Last year, our GDP witnessed a growth of 3.1%, rice production increased by 10.5% to 329,574 tonnes, gold declarations grew by 9.7 % to 261,424 ounces; there was completion of the Berbice River Bridge; old age pensions and public assistance increased by 63% and 82%, respectively; external reserves increased by 13.89% to US$355.9 million; and Government continued to collaborate with the police to improve the National Security Action Plan to ensure the safety of its citizens.
The Joint Services with the collaborative efforts of the Government should be lauded for the capture of a number of sadistic bandits who terrorized many for months. Despite this turmoil, as strong citizens, we have managed to pull through and today can celebrate Republic Day.
Guyanese of all walks of life will deck the streets on the 23rd to celebrate the dream of becoming an independent sovereign democratic nation.
Last year, Guyana’s capacity for development and our ability to maintain good macroeconomic stability was evidenced, even within the context of rising global food and fuel prices, and the global credit crunch. The Government has managed to cushion the impact by making adjustments and establishing a number of programmes to help Guyanese cope with the negative impact of the food and fuel crisis and the global credit crunch.
Let the day of Mashramani be an event which brings us together and teaches us that through collaboration greatness can be achieved.
Let us march and proceed along this direction, so as to secure more investments, more infrastructures and more social programmes for the benefit of all Guyanese.
