Fear returned to Bartica yesterday after bandits snatched $1.8M in cash from a gold trader, exactly one year after gunmen slaughtered 13 people in the mining community.
The businessman, whose name was not given, was reportedly attacked at around 20:00 hrs last night by three armed men in his home, located in an area know as the West Indian Housing Scheme.
According to reports, the victim had just disembarked from a taxi with the cash when the men barged into his home, held him at gunpoint and relieved him of the money. They then escaped.
Ranks from the Bartica Police station scoured at bushy area near the victim’s home for the gunmen, but failed to locate them.
However, Kaieteur News understands that the taxi driver who took the businessman home has been detained.
The attack occurred on the very day that residents held an inter-faith service to commemorate the deaths of 13 persons, including three policemen, who were slain by gunmen.
Bartica has also been hit by a spate of robberies. A police official said that at least ten robberies have occurred in the mining community within the past three weeks.
