With the abatement of the recent inclement weather pattern, which had forced the postponement of the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout Soccer Tournament, lead organiser Lennox Arthur has indicated that all systems have been set to go for a start on Friday February 20 at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda.
Several of the country’s leading football teams will be in action during the tournament and a high calibre of rivalry is anticipated.
Teams are colliding in the hunt for a first prize of $500,000 with the runner-up set to collect $200,000, third place $100,000 and fourth prize is $50,000.
Several sponsors are already on board, however, the organisers are still soliciting more corporate support and are calling on fans to come out and enjoy high level football as the 2009 programme get underway. Among the sponsors lending support include; Courtney Benn, Macorp, Beepat and Sons, Bakewell, Ricks and Sari, General Equipment Ltd, New Thriving Restaurant, Banks DIH Ltd, DDL, Guyana Beverage Company (Busta), DeSinco and Winston Rambarran.
Questioned on whether the prize money and other aspects of the tournament have been secured, Arthur informed that the prizes have been secured and all is ready for the start.
He indicated that the Guyana Football Federation has been in contact with him and the official agreement on the staging of the event will be signed early this week after receiving verbal conformation.
The opening fixtures on Friday will feature a city versus Linden collision. Milerock united of the Mining Town will battle the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the feature match at 8:00pm, while Georgetown Football Club (GFC) come up against Linden’s Topp XX at 6:00pm in the curtain raiser.
The event continues Sunday February 22 with Conquerors facing Golden Grove, while Pele tangle with Victoria Kings in Georgetown versus East Coast match-ups.
Other match days are February 27, March 1, 6, 8, with the semi-finals set for March 11 and the grand finale March 15.
