Coming off their win in the 1st Digicel Test of the Digicel Series 2009, Windies batsman, Brendan Nash, shares his personal thoughts of the 1st Digicel Test and his expectations for the 2nd Digicel Test in Antigua.
Brendan Nash:
Hey everyone,
After our win at Sabina Park in Jamaica, we are expecting England to come out much stronger and perform a lot better in Antigua – especially in terms of batting. I think their bowling is quite steady, so we have to be on our guard and we certainly can’t relax. I think we have to try and hit them hard again. We really have to try and stay on top and dominate them as much as we can.
On Day 4 of the 1st Digicel Test at Sabina Park, I tried to bat for as long as I could to get the lead we needed in the 1st innings. I think Ramdin and I put up quite a good partnership – together we got over 60 runs – that took us past England’s score. From then on, I tried to stay on with the remaining batsmen to offer assistance so that they could play their shots and bat the way that they bat without worrying about who was to come next.
Unfortunately, I was the ninth wicket out, but it worked out for the best considering what happened next.
The final few hours were great. We expected to win, but the speed in which we did was amazing.
I think picking up two wickets before lunch really helped. England is a very strong side and we knew what they were capable of, but once they lost Pieterson that really set the tone. We were hoping to get two or three wickets before England could even the score, but as it turns out it was down to magnificent bowling from Jerome and Sulieman.
Playing in front of a home crowd is a lot better than playing in front of people who don’t like you, that’s for sure. You hear the comments at times, some you take on board and others you just can’t listen to. The crowd definitely helped. It was a wonderful feeling and hopefully if I play in Jamaica again I’d like to get one step further and make a century.
For the 2nd Digicel Test in Antigua, we just have to keep up the momentum and improve on it. We really have been coming together as a team and we just have to keep that going. We want to start moving up the rankings ladder. We know that is going to take some time, but we just have to keep this momentum and good play going. That is really what we are working on together.
Stay tuned as I, and some of the other West Indies cricketers, keep you up to date on the Digicel Series 2009 through our diaries.
