Association Construction Service (ACS) of Hampshire Village, Berbice is the latest corporate partner to join hands with the Berbice Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) as the Board strives to ensure cricket is played at all levels in 2009.
Managing Director of ACS, Peter Lewis yesterday handed over $250,000 to the Board for hosting the first ever under-23 competition in the country.
According to the BCBC, the tournament has been designed to bridge the huge gap between the under-19 and senior levels.
The twelve first division clubs affiliated to the BCBC and several others will be part of the tournament which will see players the likes of Davendra Bishoo, Veersammy Permaul, Richard Ramdeen, Jason Sinclair, Troy Mathieson, Seon Hetmyer, Jonathan Foo and Brandon Bess taking part.
BCBC Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster, who secured the sponsorship, disclosed that the winning team would receive $60,000 and trophy while the losing finalist is guaranteed $30,000.
Prizes would also be given to the player of the finals, best batsman and best bowler.
It was also reported that the Berbice Board will soon be unveiling an under-17 tournament while plans are also worked out to have inter-zones competitors at all levels.
Treasurer of the Board Anil Beharry expressed gratitude Lewis for his sponsorship which Beharry said would play a major role in the development of the game in the Ancient County.
Beharry posited that in Berbice, cricket is undergoing amazing development with the aim of taking it to an all time high.
Randall Lewis, son of the sponsor in brief remarks said that his father was very pleased with the current administration of Berbice cricket and wanted to be a part of the efforts to develop the game and players.
He expressed the hope that the standard of the tournament would be high and would assist young cricketers to make a successful transition from the young to senior level. The board also unveiled plans for the first quarter which would be aired in its entirety on NCN Channel 15 in Berbice.
The BCBC has promised that they will be hosting a press conference every two months to keep their stakeholders updated on the progress of their activities, plans and their financial status.
Among other plans disclosed were the distribution of balls valued $500,000 to clubs by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club on the 19th, the second annual awards ceremony, under-15 exhibition matches during the lunch break on each day at the WICB four-day match at Albion from the March 6 – 9, a 70 minute DVD on coaching to be produced by the board for distribution to clubs across Berbice, a scorers clinic targeting one person from each club.
The unveiling of the first ever Berbice Cricket Academy is set for next month, sponsorship already being secured.
The BCBC would also be hosting a “Berbice Cricket Review Television Programme” every two months. The Board is working along with representatives of the Upper Corentyne area to re-establish the Upper Corentyne Association which has been dormant for several years while efforts would be made to return Whim and Chesney to the first division level.
The current financial status of the Board was also revealed by Treasurer Anil Beharry.
