Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony moved a step closer to fulfilling a promise he made to the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) to increase the popularity of the game in schools when he presented the entity with a quantity of Demonstration Boards and Chess Clocks yesterday in his office.
The Minister speaking to the media during the presentation ceremony said that consistent with earlier pronouncements he had made, the Ministry has once again demonstrated its support to the Federation to ensure that it continues its drive to have the game re-introduced in schools.
“As I’ve said before, the Ministry will continue to assist the GCF with their work to teach chess around the country and I see this as a part of the ongoing collaboration we have with them to expand chess,” Dr. Anthony pointed out.
“Next week, we will be presenting 100 boards to various schools across the country and this is in keeping with our commitment to promote chess in schools.”
President of the GCF Errol Tiwari, who received the gifts, disclosed that the boards will be used in schools which will make it easier for students to learn the game.
“It is definitely a quicker way for students to be taught the game and is a feature that is used all over the world,” Tiwari said.
He added that the gifts were the first of its kind to be donated by the Ministry and assured that students all around the country will benefit from its use.
The GCF because of the shortage of man power has planned to conduct workshops with teachers from the schools identified so that upon completion they can then return and impart the knowledge gained to their students.
Also present at yesterday’s ceremony were GCF members Shiv Nandalall and Irshad Mohamed.
