Hire car driver Mohamed Nazmul, aka Smallie, of Land of Plenty, Essequibo Coast, is urging fellow taxi operators throughout the Coast to be very careful and to be on the alert for young men purporting to be passengers.
He said that these so-called passengers are attacking and robbing taxi owners.
Mr. Nazmul’s plea came a day after he was physically attacked and robbed of one cell phone and $12,000.
Mr. Mohamed, who is also a wildlife exporter, told this newspaper that the suspect, whom he described as identifiable, boarded his vehicle at around 10:30 pm on Friday evening at the Anna Regina car park.
He said that the suspect told him to stop at Dartmouth Village, and he complied.
Mr. Nazmul said that as he stopped and parked his car a few feet over the bridge that separates Dartmouth and Westbury, the occupant, before he disembarked the vehicle, whipped out a knife and, after physically assaulting him, relieved him of his valuables.
He said that the suspect escaped along a narrow dam leading towards the Dartmouth seawall. His attempt to give chase was interrupted by a muddy and slippery dam, caused by the torrential rainfall. The incident was subsequently reported to ranks at the Anna Regina Police Station.
Recently, another hire car driver, Mr. Anand, of Affiance, was attacked and robbed of an undisclosed sum of cash, at Lima Sands on the Essequibo Coast.
