Dear Editor,
I am a pensioner and a retired Government servant nearing my 80th birthday. Member of Parliament Volda Lawrence, in last Sunday’s edition of Kaieteur News, called President Bharrat Jagdeo a Scrooge – showing off her book learning that Scrooge was the main character in the Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
Take heed, Volda; “A little learning is a dangerous thing!” Drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring… there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again” Pope.
What did the ant tell the grasshopper that wintry day when the latter begged for a morsel to save itself from dying of hunger? “What were you doing all summer?” asked the ant.
The grasshopper replied, “Don’t you know that I was dancing and singing all day long?” Go and dance winter away, you lazy sluggard. We ants don’t borrow and we ants don’t lend.”
Isn’t Mr. Jagdeo right to tell elderly Guyanese, pensioners and all and sundry who were expecting Xmas bonus and windfall that it is time to save for difficult times – “the rainy day?” And shouldn’t Volda Lawrence come to realise that the world over faces an economic squeeze? Robert Goring
