A police station is supposed to be a safe place, but some criminal elements have rendered the Brickdam Police Station a free-for-all after they broke into the Property Room and carted off several items, including cash.
Kaieteur News understands that, last Friday, the thieves broke into the facility, which stores exhibits and other important articles, through the eastern side of the building, which is close to Smyth Street.
There are reports that the burglars attempted to break open a vault inside the Property Room, but failed in this endeavour.
Investigators believe that the thieves used the cover of a downpour to perpetrate their act.
The Brickdam Police Station Property Room has been the centre of controversy for the past month, following the revelation that a rank was responsible for the disappearance of more than a million dollars.
The rank was first placed under close arrest, but now is under open arrest, since investigators are seeking legal advice on the matter.
Last Friday’s break-in appears to be an inside job, and investigators believe that it might have been an attempt to pervert the course of justice with regards to the investigation of the rank.
According to a source, there was no sign that the fence surrounding the Brickdam compound was breached, nor was the barbed wire interfered with.
