Dear Editor,
I represented Guyana in the Beijing Olympic Games in the 200 metre race. I know that there was a lot of talk about me and how I shouldn’t have been representing Guyana, and I honestly say that I feel that I did disgrace Guyana with my performance.
I ran that time of 21.36, and I didn’t tell anyone besides my teammates and coach in Beijing, that I strained my hamstring about 40 metres into the race, but I had the heart to finish the race knowing that there was nothing else I could do but that.
I represent Guyana to the fullest and with pride. I’m not like other athletes who just want to run in the Olympics then never talk to anyone again.
I have kept in contact with Mr. Noel Adonis, and I will continue to do that because unlike other athletes who ran and left, I take pride in my roots.
Most of the family I see in the States is on my mother’s side so, I’m always surrounded by my Guyanese heritage and when I was with my teammates in Beijing it was great because it felt like family.
I know I also get a lot of criticism about never stepping foot in Guyana, but I have wanted to do so for years, but that’s always been something that would be hard to do between training and school, which also stops much of my competing for Guyana.
After this year I will graduate and plan to represent Guyana in any way I can. I would have loved to represent Guyana in the World indoor games this year, but couldn’t because I am still in my collegiate season, but when my season is over I will be able to represent Guyana and will take as much pride in it as always.
What a lot of people don’t believe is that a US athlete will keep representing his country out of the Olympics, but knowing everything that’s going on in Guyana I want to be someone that helps with track and field.
If I could secure a contract, I’m going to push my hardest to try to give back to Guyana, shoes, clothes, something, anything that can help.
I just want to let people know that this is the way I feel and my interest in Guyana’s track and field is genuine.
Once again, sorry for the disappointing display in Beijing, but I swear I will make it up as time goes on. Thank you.
