Kevin Martin, 29, of 75 Craig Street, Campbellville, was denied his pretrial liberty when he made his first court appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday. It is alleged that the accused, on November 14, had in his possession one 9mm pistol. He pleaded not guilty.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson, who, in a bid to secure bail, told the court that his client had “noticed something in the newspaper.”
The lawyer added that that was the only reason why his client had come forward to “clear” his name.
Thompson said that Martin took the gun to the Joint Services after he received a telephone call telling him to bring the gun. The lawyer further added that all his client wanted to do was to assist the “police”.
He said that Martin received the gun from Travis Sobers, a former member of the Guyana Defence Force, who was jailed for five years on conviction of stealing the same weapon. The lawyer added that his client was given the gun because the “solider” could not enter the National Stadium with the gun, so he brought it to Martin’s house.
The lawyer admitted that his client was not the holder of a firearm license, but he pointed out that the gun is registered with the army.
Police Prosecutor Desiree Fowler objected to bail on the ground that the offence is one of a serious nature. She added that the weapon is from the Guyana Defence Force, and it was alleged that is was stolen. The prosecutor said that Martin was never the holder of a license, and in those circumstances bail should be denied.
Martin was remanded to prison, and is expected to make his next court appearance on April 7, 2009.
