A church service today at the St. George’s Cathedral will launch a week of activities to mark this year’s Road Safety Week.
The Guyana Police Force in collaboration with the National Road Safety Council will be conducting several activities to mark the occasion, which is being held under the theme, “Be Wise; Practice Road Safety and Stay Alive”.
Apart from the church service, today there will be a televised television/radio message by Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, which will be aired on the National Communications Network, Channel 11 and the Voice of Guyana.
Tomorrow a schoolchild will give a road safety talk on national radio.
On Tuesday, officials of the Police Traffic Department and the National Road Safety Council will visit the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s accident ward from 14:00 hours to 15:00 hours.
A one-day mini exhibition and symposium at the National Cricket Stadium will also be held from 09:00 hours to 15:00 hours.
On Friday, road safety officials will host a live call in programme on NCN.
The activities will end with a Vehicle Owner/Driver Workshop at the Guyana Red Cross Society Building from 09:00 to 12:00 hours.
Traffic Chief Neil Semple is optimistic that if all goes well, a 20-year record can be broken in terms of the least amount of road fatalities.
There are 38 days left in the year and the country’s road fatality figure stands at 96. “If we can keep the figure under the 100 mark, we will certainly break a record,” the Traffic Chief said.
He is hoping that persons will take cognizance of this and curtail their activities during the Christmas season so as to minimize the incidences of traffic accidents.
