By Franklin Wilson
After an absence of over two decades, night cycling made a welcome return on Friday night last at the Everest Cricket ground, thanks to the efforts of Geddes Grant through their Cadbury brand and Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club and National Coach, Hassan Mohamed.
The athletes and fans enjoyed an evening of exciting races under the cool night sky and soft Atlantic Breeze which kept all and sundry cool throughout the evening.
Taking centre stage in the feature 30-lap race was Albert Philander who is based in St. Martin and rides for the VCG Cycle Club there.
Philander out pedaled a strong field which included Alonzo Greaves, Christopher Holder Warren Mc Kay, Robin Persaud, Ian Jackson and Jaikarran Sukhai among others, claiming 24 of the 30 prime prizes which were on offer to underline his dominant performance.
Carrying the pace for the first five laps was Mc Kay who took those five primes, the sixth one was taken by Greaves but then it was Philander from the seventh to the end. He stormed into the lead leaving in his wake to battle in cat and mouse like fashion, Greaves and company.
Mc Kay took the second place ahead of Holder who also placed second to Greaves in the Devil takes the hindmost event. Mc Kay placed third. Greaves was also number one among the category 1 and 2 riders, with victory ahead of Mc Kay and Philander.
Holder, who continues to showcase his ability and endurance as a junior competing against his senior counterparts, out sprinted Darren Allen to win the category 3 and 4 event with Andrew Persaud 3rd.
The win was Holder’s third in a row. The two races preceding this were the Juvenile, which he won ahead of Ozia McCually and Johnathan Fagundes and the junior with Enzo Matthews and Fagundes following in that order.
