Tiwari, Khan lead National Chess Championships

After three grueling round of chess in the National Chess Championships, Errol Tiwari lead the Senior Category with three points follow by Loris Nathoo on two and half.
In the Junior Category of the tournament, West Demerara’s Taffin Khan, who is the favorite to win, has been unbeaten and also leads with three points.
The Championship’s begun on Saturday at the Ocean Spray International Hotel, and was declared open by Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Minister Anthony has called the Championship, Guyana’s signature chess event. He wished the players well during their deliberations over the chess board over the next month.
On Saturday, National Champion Kriskal Persaud and Errol Tiwari were the only winners, while among the junior’s Taffin Khan, Cecil Cox, Khalid Gajraj and Saeed Ali also won their games.

On Sunday, Tiwari defeated Frankie Farley and Kriskal Persaud to emerge the leader with maximum points in the tournament.
Tiwari went into the game with the National Champion with the exchange of a rook versus a bishop, Persaud eventually resign after he found it difficult to stop a pass pawn on the king rook file.
Nathoo’s game against Farley was a thriller with Nathoo having two minutes remaining to his opponent’s twenty to complete the game. Nathoo checkmated Farley with only seconds to spare.
Taffin Khan leads the juniors with maximum points. He is closely followed by Saeed Ali, Cecil Cox and Rashad Hussain.
The tournament continues this Saturday at the Ocean Spray International Hotel from 10 am sharp. The tournament then moves to the King’s Plaza Hotel on Sunday from 10 am.
