Substandard matches smuggled into Guyana
….GNBS threatens prosecution
The Guyana National Bureau of Statistics (GNBS) has clamped down on importers, retailers and distributors who are illegally selling non compliant matches to the Guyanese consumers.
In a press release issued yesterday to the media, the GNBS stated that the matches, ‘Grayburn’ and ‘Volcano’, have failed to meet inspection requirements, as they are inadequately labeled and threaten the safety of the users, since they failed the tests conducted by the GNBS.
The GNBS noted that the matches which are in breach of the national labeling standards are exhibited for sale on the local markets. Reports reaching the GNBS from its inspectors in East Berbice revealed that during surveillance of shops and other retail outlets, the matches are still on sale.
The GNBS states that despite numerous seizures and continuous appeals made by the bureau to stop the sale of the said brand of matches, persons are still purchasing them.
They are of the belief that the commodities are being smuggled into Guyana and sold at a cheaper price to consumers, because they are also banned in Suriname.
The GNBS is strongly cautioning consumers against purchasing the matches, and has warned importers, retailers and distributors, who continue to flout the laws, that GNBS inspectors will continue to seize and destroy the matches when found and that they can face prosecution for their blatant nonconformance.
