Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me space in your newspaper to pen this letter. When I learnt that there was going to be a return of the Sari Pageant, I was very elated for I used to attend every Sari Pageant (Contest) from way back in the 70s. So at the National Park on the evening of 25 October, I was reminiscing the past as I viewed every aspect of the show.
I am a person who paid very keen attention to how the contestants were performing and I thought that the judges’ decision was very distasteful.
The first thing was that the judges took a very long time to arrive at what, in my opinion, was a simple and easy decision to make, since the majority of the audience throughout the show were very vocal in support of those contestants who performed to their satisfaction.
It was very clear that delegate number one got the crowd’s appreciation as the best performer, but was not placed.
This was confirmed in the disapproval of the decision by the majority at the Park. I think that delegate number eleven who stumbled miserably three times, should not have placed at all. Instead she was declared first runner up.
Also, delegate number four stumbled once but was declared the winner.
Logically, if the majority of those who viewed the pageant at the National Park and on television, thought that delegate number one outshone delegate number eleven and delegate number eleven was the first runner up, then obviously delegate number one should have been declared the winner and I saw it this way also. In conclusion, I would say that I am deeply disappointed knowing that the Sari Pageant was absent for so long and on its return could not stand the test. Richard Raj
