Barrington closer to first-class debut selection with 2nd President Cup century

p three-day cricket match which is being used to pick the Guyana team for the next Carib Beer regional four-day series.
Barrington, who will be hoping to increase his score today, got good support from national 20/20 player Chris Barnwell who made 71 with 13 fours from 61 balls as the Lance Gibbs Tigers reached 322-9 in reply to the 242 made by the Rohan Kanhai Strikers on the opening day.
The diminutive right-hander stroked the ball in authoritative fashion and his entertaining 206-ball innings was decorated with 18 fours and two sixes and lasted 320 minutes as he followed up his solid 113 in the last round with another superb batting display to stake a strong claim to open the batting with Krishna Arjune in the Carib Beer series.
After openers Ryan Ramdass (11) and Rajendra Chandrika (19) were removed early to leave the score on 40-2, Trevon Garraway, who looked the best of the fast bowlers on show, removed Assad Fudadin for a duck before national under-19 pacer Keron Fraser dismissed Krishna Deosarran (15) at 81-4 as former National under-19 keeper Delroy Jacobs held excellent back-to-back catches.
The versatile Barnwell joined the well entrenched Barrington and together they took the score to 184 before their century partnership ended when Barnwell was bowled by off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine.
Deonarine, who along with Ramdass are the two players with Test experience in the competition, quickly sent back Devon Clements (6) and Derwin Christian (17) as the Tigers slipped to 243-8.
Garraway then bowled Ryan Hercules (3) and Davendra Bishoo (17) missed a looping full toss from part-time spinner Gajanand Singh and was bowled at 295-9.
Brandon Bess (4*) then joined Barrington in overcast conditions to see their team to the close without further loss.
Deonarine, who strangely opted not to utilize specialist spinners Sauid Drepaul and Rakesh Goberdhan ahead of Singh and Orin Forde, finished with 3-47 while Garraway had 3-50.
Barrington will hope to receive support from Bess today as he attempts to build on his unbeaten 136 to ensure his selection in the Guyana team is an automatic one.
