Young Warriors defeated Bermine by six wickets at Cumberland yesterday to take the Berbice Neal and Massy 40-overs first division cricket title and advance to today’s national semi-final at Blairmont.
The Warriors, who meet West Demerara team Mavericks from 10:00hrs today in West Berbice for a place in the historic first ever national club final under flood lights at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday, were spearheaded by an unfinished 118-run fifth wicket stand between former West Indies batsman Gajanand Singh and Berbice all-rounder Paul Wintz as they reached 174-4 in 30 overs chasing the 171-8 off 40 over made by Bermine.
National under-19 Captain Eugene La Fleur top scored for Bermine with 39, while Essequibo senior inter county off-spinner Andrew Williams (27*), Devon Clements (25), and Maxi De Jonge (24) chipped in with the bat for the New Amsterdam unit as Singh took 3-36 with his off-spin and former Guyana under-15 player Balram Samaroo had 2-20.
Former Guyana under-19 pacer Kelon Henry (3-28) kept Bermine in the fight with three early wickets before Singh, who hit eight fours and a six in his 62 and Wintz, whose 54 contained six fours and a six, joined forces to bat their team to victory.
