Strong contingent expected from BerbiceBy Rawle Welch
The Ancient County of Berbice will be sending a strong contingent to participate in this year’s Le Meridien / Pegasus Hotel Open Tennis Championships which starts this Friday, at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
The squad will be led by last year’s Ladies runner-up Carol Humphrey and the experienced Godfrey Lowden in the senior categories, while Deion Blackmore and a host of talented junior players some of whom are newcomers to the sport will provide the core of their challenge for top honours.
According to Humphrey, who recently returned from a Coaches Course in El Salvador, the sport is making a revival in the County and she expects some good performances from the young players despite their lack of tournament experience.
“I’m looking for good results from players such as Jamelle Herbert, Shauna John in the 10 years and under Division; Sancia Timmers and Tanya Niamatali in the Girls 14 and under category; Deion Blackmore, who has a bit of competition experience and Keith Wintz in the Boys 14 and under division.
Among the seniors, Humphrey is expected to feature in the Ladies Singles, while Mario Niamatali and Anthony Ameerally, both of whom will be returning to the game competitively after being away for over a decade should provide stern resistance for their opponents.
Dennis Greaves and Brian Ramsarran will team up in the 45 and over Doubles, while Lowden and / Niamatali contest the 35 and over Doubles.
