Govt. must do all it can to discourage squatting
DEAR EDITOR,
Squatting along the immediate environs of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport cannot be tolerated any longer.
As far as I recall, Guyana is perhaps the only country in the Caribbean where squatting surrounds the International Airport. And the raw fact is that in the community there is a hideout for criminals.
Squatting has become an epidemic in this country and the administration must make it a conscious policy to discourage this cancer. Many of these squatters have properties elsewhere in Guyana. Even if they don’t, they should be allocated lands along the hidden highway or in hinterland areas. Put their pioneering spirits to good use by partnering them in developing the interior.
Very definitely, the Airport Management has to secure its property in a more pragmatic manner, in addition to bringing security personnel to greater accountability.
Guyana also has to factor stealing into all its projects; stealing is an industry by itself in this country. The sad thing is that we do not seem to have the will to fight it.
