More than one month has passed since the New Providence Bridge collapsed, with one man losing his life and another being injured, and the bridge is still yet to be completed. Despite this, workers at the construction site of the new bridge have said that they are making progress.
Construction work has been ongoing at the bridge in New Providence
The Minister of Public Works and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, noted that there had been some changes to the original design of the bridge and this, he explained, had caused progress to slow down. “Arrangements are being made for temporary one-way traffic to flow over the bridge,” the Minister said.
Instead of constructing a wooden bridge, like the one which had collapsed, the Public Works Minister explained that the deck of the bridge would be cast out of cement. The Minister estimated that, inclusive of the curing time, the bridge should be ready in approximately two weeks.
Meanwhile, many of the residents of the area doubt that the bridge will completed anytime soon. They are also peeved at the slow rate of progress.
Other concerns as to the inconvenience it has caused the residents are also evident. Some of the residents have made it clear that the Ministry of Public Works should ensure that the bridge is completed, as they (residents) had made innumerable complaints about the state of disrepair the bridge had fallen into.
The bridge collapsed at approximately 10:30hrs on July 28 and the two men, who were travelling in a cement truck which toppled as a result, were pinned down for about two and a half hours in the vehicle. Reports indicated that the driver died while waiting to be pulled out of the vehicle.
The residents from within the community had bitterly complained about the poor condition that the bridge was in before it collapsed. They said that for the past two years the bridge has been rotting and complaints were made to the Ministry of Public Works to have it renovated. (Rustom Seegopaul)
