Dear Editor,
On Saturday, 19th July, 2008, a most regrettable incident occurred at the Hippo Bar and Caribbean Restaurant, Bay Street, St. Michael, Barbados, in which Anthony Griffith, a 27-year-old Guyanese national, was fatally shot, and Seelochanie Samuels, the proprietor, also a Guyanese national, was left nursing a gunshot injury, during a robbery which took place there.
Following this unfortunate tragedy, a number of adverse comments of a speculative nature have been circulating surrounding (i) the facts of the incident itself, (ii) the supposed motive for the act (iii) bringing into question the genuineness of the police investigations of the matter, and (iv) a xenophobic attitude towards Guyanese on the island.
Contrary to the above, there is no evidence to support the assertions that the attack was an attack on the Guyanese community and not a robbery; that Samuels is a strong advocate for the rights of Guyanese in Barbados; or that there is a dislike for Guyanese in Barbados.
Further, the Royal Barbados Police Force denies any harassment of Samuels, and that the matter is being dealt with other than in a professional manner.
It must be noted that the Royal Barbados Police Force is a professional and responsible organisation, whose members are committed to delivering the same level of service to every inhabitant in Barbados — local, visitor or resident alike (Guyanese included) — in the pursuit of its primary objectives, viz. the protection of life and property, and the prevention and detection of crime, inter alia.
We wish to assure the relatives of the victims, and anyone with an interest in the matter that, from the inception, we have been and will continue to conduct intensive investigations into this matter with the ultimate goal of identifying, apprehending and bringing the perpetrator of this crime to justice.
