Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday sentenced a man to four years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a possession of arms and ammunition charge.
The accused, 23-year-old Ramesh Bahadur, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on Thursday, last, in Sussex Street, he had in his possession one .38 revolver without being the holder of a valid firearm license.
It is also alleged, that on the same day, he had in his possession two matching rounds of ammunition. Bahadur pleaded guilty to both charges.
Police prosecutor Robert Clement, in stating the facts to the court, noted that on the day in question the accused was about to commit a robbery.
According to Clement, at around 11:45h on Thursday, the accused was at home when he was visited by a friend, who indicated to him “we have a wuk to go on”.
The court was further told that the friend then gave the accused the weapon along with the ammunition. The men then left in a car, and while on Sussex Street they were stopped and searched by a police patrol. The weapon was found in Bahadur’s pants waist and the bullets in his pocket.
Meanwhile, when the magistrate asked Bahadur if he had anything to say for himself, he answered in the affirmative.
He told the magistrate that it was the first time that he was attempting to commit a robbery. He added that he is the father of a 10-year-old daughter, and has two brothers and sisters.
The magistrate then asked the accused if he is employed, to which he indicated that he was a goldsmith, but gave up the trade because it ‘got slow’.
The magistrate then sentenced the accused to four years’ imprisonment on each charge, but the sentences will run concurrently. The accused was also fined $50,000 on each charge.
