The much anticipated opening of the Berbice River Bridge has suffered another setback.
A shipment of components for the retractor spans used on the construction has been delayed.
According to informed sources, a consignment of much needed parts for the project has been returned to its point of origin in the United Kingdom, (UK) since last July.
This was because the shipping company, EWL, contracted to bring the parts to Guyana ended up in bankruptcy, causing its operations to cease.
Reshipment of the equipment was effected only last week and the required parts are therefore not expected to arrive immediately in the country.
This will put back operations on the construction of the structure by more than two months, according to Bridge officials, making its planned commission in August virtually impossible.
When contacted, the contracting company undertaking the bridge’s building promised to explain the reason for the delay but has so far failed to do so.
