In keeping with its promise following last Wednesday’s fire, the Georgetown Public Hospital administration has already transferred the patients of the psychiatric ward to the National Psychiatric Hospital.
According to chief executive officer of the hospital, Michael Khan, exactly 24 hours after the fire, all the patients were transferred to the facility.
With regards to other patients who may be in need of psychiatric treatment, Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said measures have been put in place to handle this.
According to the minister, a temporary holding area has been set up. He further explained that if a patient visits the hospital and it is found that further treatment is needed, then that person would be kept in that area for a 24-hour period.
Dr Ramsammy added that if further medical treatment is deemed necessary, then the patient would be sent to the National Psychiatric Hospital.
The Health Minister said that systems have also been put in place for the relocated patients to continue to access the same treatment they were previously receiving.
Meanwhile, the Patient Care Assistant class room has also been relocated.
According to Minister Ramsammy, classes will be conducted in an adjoining building in the same compound with the Medical Outpatient Clinic. The Medical Outpatient Department has since been relocated to the Genito Urinary Medical Clinic building, which is below the Malaria Clinic.
Last Wednesday morning, the building which housed the Psychiatric Ward, the Medical Out Patient Department and the Patient Care Assistant classroom were gutted by fire which is believed to be the work of an arsonist.
Meanwhile, the man whom investigators believed set fire to the building was up to yesterday still in custody at the Alberttown Police Station.
