DEAR EDITOR,
The Mayor and City Council has expressed concern over the untidy state of the immediate environment of scrap dealers, in the city of Georgetown.
In some cases, old junk and pieces of metal are left on parapets, pavements and other thoroughfares. This poor quality of storage is damaging the shoulders of our roadways.
Some of these dealers are operating without the requisite permission of the City Engineer’s Department. Therefore, they are not guided by the rules and regulations of the Council.
The Council is appealing to those, who are engaged in this industry, to account for public safety and health, in their operations.
They should contact the Mayor and City Council for information and guidance on their business, in the capital.
Notwithstanding, the Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Works will begin a campaign to remove all such materials from roadsides, parapets and other areas of the City.
Similarly, the Council is calling upon those home-owners who have placed boulders and other obstructions on their bridges and parapets to remove them.
This action is not only illegal but also poses a serious threat to life and limb. No one has the right to place any such obstructionable materials on the parapets or roadside without the authority of the Council. Therefore, citizens should desist from this action. Royston King, Public Relations Officer, Mayor and City Council
