The Parrot is fully aware of the many changes, social and infrastructural, that have occurred over the years in Guyana. The transformation, which has “leap-frogged,” is amazing.
The East Bank Demerara, with the Eccles and Diamond Housing Schemes, amongst others, and Providence, with the stadium and international hotel, the Essequibo Road from Supenaam to Charity, the CARICOM headquarters, the Conference Centre, the road from Georgetown to Rosignol, the Berbice Bridge, the many new hospitals and health centres, schools, and the ongoing construction boom are just a few examples.
Many who left these shores many moons ago and returned for World Cup Cricket last year were blown away with the evolution of the local landscape. Those who are heading home for Carifesta X will be privy to a similar phenomenon.
Potholed roads, frequent blackouts, “fetching” potable water a mile from home and waiting for an overseas relative to bring an “ice apple” and a piece of chocolate are history.
Gone! So are National Service, students and public servants working on Hope Estate, the People’s Militia, Mass Games, KSI “shopping centres” and rice flour.
Getting a passport now is easy. We now got drive-thru banks, drive-thru fast-food joints, and even drive-thru water depots. We got more vehicles than roads, including Lexus, Hummers, BMWs, Mercedes, Thunders…oops, Tundras and Tacomas. The Morris Oxfords and Vauxhalls and Hillmans have been reduced to antiques.
Even the way the dead is dealt with has changed. The transformation from placing ice around the body, which used to lie in the backyard on old zinc sheets, to parlours with websites is overly mind blowing. Yes, parlours with websites!
Some have aggressive advertising campaigns; advertising special discounts and “lay away” plans. Some find it difficult to compete with this type of aggression and have been forced out; business dead and up for sale, like the one on Camp Street.
One parlour even participated in Mash; had a float and all. The impression one gets is like some kind o’ “war” is been fought over who best can make the dead comfortable.
It seems that the days when someone, after meeting his/her demise and would have quietly been laid to rest, are also gone. Even the way of advertising of those who died has changed.
It dead on radio and alive on TV. It was dead on some TV stations when it was alive on the Half-Dozen channel.
For now, it dead on this particular station but alive on others. It would be interesting to see which channel remains alive or dead when the Half-Dozen channel goes back “live” next week.
Would it attract half-a-dozen or more? Let’s see. The Parrot has a few questions. Regarding the “lay away” plan, who making the final payment, the relative or the “client”? Who browsing the website?
Should I believe that the “client” would check to verify that his/her profile is posted after they would have been “posted” to the Great Beyond?
Who is the webmaster checking the amount of these kinds of hits the site getting? Who, eh? Suppose the “client” ain’t satisfied with the service, what “course of action” can he/she take? Do they have a money-back guarantee?
The changes are indeed numerous. Squawk! Squawk!
