DEAR EDITOR,
I read with interest recent articles concerning the refusal by Minister Robert Persaud, a member of the PPP Executive and Central Committee to speak to the media about the PPP upcoming Congress.
That Mr. Persaud deferred to the General Secretary on this matter is no surprise as he is one of the hardcore members of the PPP.
In fact, it is surprising that his efforts to create a PPP forte in the Ministry of Agriculture go with little attention.
My information is that Minister Persaud has made a number of low-level appointments to agencies and departments with certain political types.
Here is a Minister fortifying the rule of the PPP. I would be surprised if this magnitude of appointment of political commissars has been done by any other Minister. Seems as if Robert Persaud’s agenda is to entrench the presence of the PPP in the State.
So, why should anyone then be surprised by him refusing to tell the media about the PPP Congress? This is just another manifestation of how a hardcore PPP member behaves.
But in this day and age, he should know there is little tolerance for no disclosure especially on a topic such as the PPP Congress which is a matter of public interest. What is there to hide?
Also what we may see playing out here is a much bigger scenario. In any political party or group, there are members who have different levels of commitment and dedication.
There are some who see their association as an opportunity for personal elevation while others focus on the interest of the wider group. The PPP, PNC and AFC are no different, in this regard.
The last PNC Congress was an example of some who decided that their own ambition was more important than party unity. The earlier departure of Trotman from the PNC perhaps has its roots in such a conflict.
The AFC just after the 2006 elections suffered a similar bout of personal ambition versus what is good for the group. We all remember the public spat involving Trotman and Gaumatti Singh.
The PPP also has its own internal issues. Mr. Persaud seems to belong to a flock which thinks that Party values and organisation is sacred, and has little tolerance for public intrusion.
The silence and strict management of the PPP affairs around Congress may be a ploy to prevent the PNC Congress fiasco from taking place at the PPP’s.
I urge the private media to dig and if Mr. Persaud and his other hardcore members don’t want to talk, I am sure there might be those with their own agendas who would want to tell what’s really taking place.
