ALBION, CORENTYNE: The fourth annual Berbice Expo and Trade Fair opens tomorrow at the Albion Sports Complex.
President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Bhigroop Poonai said that preparation for the site is on schedule. The biggest challenge is the inclement weather. Fortunately the ground is so designed to allow for a fast drainage of excess water.
All booths have been sold out; to date the exhibitors are 80 in number. They include International Pharmaceutical Agency, Guyana Sugar Corporation, Shivam Furniture Company (out of India), Caribbean International Distribution Inc., Evil Eyes Video and Electronic Centre, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, Digicel, Ministry of Agriculture, New Guyana Marketing Corporation, NARI, National Dairy Development Programme and a Brazilian contingent.
The Exposition would feature four nights of live band, including the Melody Makers.
On Sunday night, a team from the CARIFESTA X Committee comprising members from Berbice, Georgetown and other locations will stage a two-hour display.
The event wraps up on Monday July 28.
The activity is coordinated by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
Earlier this week, members of the organising committee met with representatives of the Guyana Police Force to discuss security arrangements and in the final analysis security can be expected from the Guyana Sugar Corporation, COPS and the Guyana Police Force.
Mr. Poonai said discussions were also held with the Transport and Harbours Department to finalise arrangements for the vessels plying the Rosignol/New Amsterdam route. The decision is that the ferry operates extra hours this weekend and Monday.
The main objective of the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair is to showcase business concerns. “The Chamber being a business entity, we are trying in all ways to promote businesses and in so doing create opportunities not only for the manufacturers but the small man as well.
It also serves to strengthen ties between our local businesses and those outside of the Region and in many cases open new avenues. Over the years we are cognisant that the Expo has boosted our tourism drive tremendously.”
This year the organisers are placing more emphasis on the showcasing rather than selling of merchandise as was prevalent in previous years.
Mr. Poonai emphasised that the efforts put into the success of the Expo is not for personal gain but for that of the entire community.
He called on persons to come out in their numbers and support the biggest activity in Region Six.
Tickets can be uplifted at various venues in Berbice, including Sukpaul’s Filling Stations at Corriverton and New Amsterdam; Dhanar Filling Station, West Coast Berbice; Gafoors; Poonai’s Pharmacy and Imran and Sons General Store at Rose Hall Town.
The President of the Chamber expressed gratitude to the Guyana Sugar Corporation, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, T. Geddes Grant, Fidelity Group of Companies, the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, among other agencies.
This year the traditional arch at the entrance is sponsored by T. Geddes Grant (Neal and Massy).
The theme for Berbice Expo and Trade Fair 2008 is ‘Pioneering the Agri Revolution’. (Melissa Johnson)
