Dear Editor,
As a former employee of the Georgetown City Council, I am dismayed and ashamed, but not really surprised, at the recent disclosure of financial irregularity, discriminatory practices and gross incompetence associated with some of the senior officers.
My only real surprise was that it took the Mayor and Councillors so long to reach breaking point with all of the nonsense that has been going on at City Hall.
I can recall seeking financial assistance from the administration in the form of a small loan or advance on my salary a few years ago, to allow me to pay for my daughter’s examination fees, only to be bluntly refused and told that the Council does not have the money to afford a staff loan. Lo and behold, members of this very administration have been found giving themselves huge loans after loans, and advances after advances all along. How could this be fair?
I worked with the Council for many years without receiving a single increment or raise from the bottom of the salary scale to which I was assigned.
I can recall being forced to take my vacation leave when it was not convenient, as the consequence of not doing so would have been same being forfeited, whilst these senior administrators took no leave and rewarded themselves with an in-lieu-of-leave payment. Is this not blatant discrimination?
And I could go on and on with instances of corruption, discrimination and wrongdoings, but it would make no sense burdening this letter with more, as the recent report gives a clear view of what has been happening.
