DEAR EDITOR
I am a frequent reader of the Frederick Kissoon column. Most of his articles are inundated with anti-Government sermons.
There is this inevitable belief, whenever purchasing the daily Kaieteur News, that you are in for another Freddie special swansong anti-Government rhetoric. When that is not enough, then Mr. Vishnu Bisram, Mr Ravi Dev and Mr Ricky Singh feel the heat for their differing views and independence.
Like many others, I do admire Freddie for his bold writings and appeal to readers with his captivating and sometimes incisive research in establishing his point. What I do not like about him is his conscience.
Mr. Kissoon views the Government as a dictatorship, or, rather, actions of the Government that lead to dictatorship. But I sometimes wonder if he is not an anti-Government dictator through his writings? In fact, I do appreciate his constant revelations of indiscretions of the Government, since the Government is accountable to the people and Freddie is a guardian.
But I believe that any academic who takes on such a Herculean task must also be balanced in their approach, in order to lend credence to their integrity and to allow their readership the dignity of self observation and acceptance.
No one will believe that Guyana is a failed state, as Freddie is implying, since what is happening in Rwanda will never occur here.
And I do believe as well that there are conscientious efforts being made to safeguard our nationality, foster economic growth and to strengthen our resolve as Guyanese. Is CARIFESTA not going to achieve some of these objectives?
But please, Freddie, do not get me wrong, I am not an apologist of the Government, but I think that I can speak for those persons who may be easily overwhelmed into thinking that everything is bad about the Government and there is no hope, as you so daily suggest.
This is far from reality, and may I suggest that Freddie be more realistic, having qualified as he boldly claims to pronounce on Guyana.
This country depends on you even as a critic of the Government, and so you should not be embarrassed when the Government proclaims progress and success and that it is evident.
I notice that when this happens you go into obscurity, Freddie, and the nation is lost.
I notice further that you lambaste the state media and the Government information Service for what you term as propaganda, as the Government highlights their achievements.
Does it not occur to you, Freddie, that if you highlight some of those very events of which you know about, that that propaganda will be less? Accept the challenge, Freddie, and explore this country in an objective manner, as Mr. Bisram is doing with his polls.
Elroy Stephney
