‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton referred to his upcoming engagement against former European Champion Guyanese Howard Eastman as a fight he could not avoid.
The two will clash in the main bout of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control ‘Judgement Day’ five-fight Card scheduled to be staged on July 5 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Dalton, who will be putting his local middleweight title on the line, told Kaieteur Sport that there comes a time when you have to face the ‘big boys’.
“In boxing there comes a time when there is no escape, as long as you are a champion there will be challengers so you have to deal with that in this sport,” Denny said.
Denny revealed that his preparation at this point has been going well after being two months in the gym.
“I am both mentally and physically prepared and even though not much is known of Howard’s style, our camp is confident of retaining the title.”
The local middleweight champion, who was originally scheduled to fight another Guyanese Raul Frank, before the latter had to withdraw due to a back injury said that even though the notice of a change of opponent came at short notice, he has adjusted his focus and is still confident of victory.
“Even though it was a sudden change from the original opponent, you just have to understand that the game is like that and at some point you have to deal with situations like that.”
Asked if he was willing to make any predictions, Denny declined, saying he was not one to do that, but would just leave it to the Lord Almighty.
Questioned on whether he had any prior knowledge of his opponent’s style, Dalton responded in the negative, adding that all he knew was that he is a tall fighter.
“I cannot say if he is fast or a heavy puncher, but all I know is that I’ve got to prepare for what ever style he presents.”
Dalton when questioned on who he felt would have offered him a tougher fight between Frank and Eastman in his response said that he simply did not know, but cautioned that he usually does not underestimate any fighter.
“All I’m saying is that I will retain my title come July 5.”
About his training the champion disclosed that most of the heavy work is over and is currently doing a lot of speed work and building up his power.
“The speed is to give me the edge in the fight, while the power is to boost my chance of an early win if the opportunity presents itself.”
