Shoddy work done at LBI Housing Scheme
Dear Editor,
I am a resident of La Bonne Intention (LBI) Housing Scheme on the East Coast of Demerara and a die-hard supporter of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government.
The citizens of this community mostly work at the sugar estate situated at LBI, and I am 100 % sure that taxes have been deducted from their salaries going towards building this nation and, of course, paying salaries of the public servants (the President, ministers, Police Force, Defence Force, etc), not to forget the others who are working in Georgetown and its environs, who also pay taxes to develop this nation.
I have been working for over 30 years now and have been paying taxes, but to see the development this Government has done in my area I am ashamed, because this scheme (population) has about 99 % supporters of this Government.
The Better Hope/LBI NDC that looks after the area has repaired the scheme road, but this lasted only about two years. There are very big holes to most parts of this road.
The Sixth Street was done just after the last elections, and it has started getting holes already. The School Street has never been repaired since the 1960s when it was made, and it is in a very bad state.
The Guyana Water Authority put down new pipes in our area, only for these to be found leaking later (shabby work and poor materials).
They would then come to rectify the problem, only to damage the streets in addition to the shabby work already done by the contractors.
The Neighbourhood Democratic Council (mentioned above) that operates in our area is a total failure. The drains are all clogged up, and when the rain falls water is quickly accumulated.
The koker boxes that are in the area have not been cleared for a number of years now. Why is the NDC functioning? Just to collect taxes?
Due to the high tides that affected the Montrose area recently, the Government has taken away some of the responsibilities of the Better Hope NDC.
Can the Government please do something for the citizens of the LBI community, so that they can benefit on some returns on the taxes that they pay?
