Dear Editor,
I would like to make a small comment. I visited Guyana last week, 6– 13 of May, 2008, to attend a relative’s funeral in Berbice. After the funeral I stayed at some relatives on the West Coast of Demerara.
I must say that I am very much pleased with all the progress going on presently in Guyana, after leaving these shores some 25 years ago. I visited the Leonora Hospital and was amazed by the type of work done and the level of service performed by the Cuban medical team.
My only beef is the hospital does not have a backup generator that actually works during emergency power outage. So if the doctor is working with a patient and the light goes off, I guess he has no choice but send them to another facility that has power. Every minute is critical when you have a sick patient.
So in conclusion we have a beautiful building and the best possible professional doctors and nurses available in this part of the world, yet when the lights go out we might as well close the doors and gates of this new hospital. Also an Ambulance will complete this unit making it a professional and world class facility.
Last Saturday as I went to the Leonora market I could see the Cuban doctors and nurses shopping among the local people of Leonora. So I took another trip to the hospital around 7 pm as the same time the power outage came on.
What I noticed was the place where these people are staying also has no power. So I said to myself these people are professionals who leave their country and family to provide a service to another country, yet they are not treated with respect.
I am not blaming anybody because it is only a comment. I’m hoping the government could fix a potential situation before a much larger one arise.
