Dec 30, 2025 Letters
Dear Editor,
I write as a concerned citizen of Guyana regarding the continued delay in swearing in the Leader of the Opposition.
Many Guyanese are struggling to understand whether this delay is due to genuine legal or constitutional concerns, or whether it is the result of political reluctance. Whatever the reason, the effect on the people is deeply troubling. A functioning democracy depends on balance, accountability, and effective parliamentary oversight. Without a sworn-in Opposition Leader, those safeguards are weakened.
The absence of an Opposition Leader does not only affect political parties; it affects ordinary citizens who rely on strong institutions to protect their interests, ensure transparency, and uphold democratic values. Prolonged delay risks eroding public trust and gives the impression that political interests are being placed above the well-being of the nation.
I respectfully urge the relevant authorities to act with urgency and clarity, and to put the interests of the people of Guyana first by resolving this matter in a transparent and lawful manner. Guyana deserves leadership that strengthens democracy rather than weakens it.
Yours faithfully,
M. Shiv
