(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) has raised concern over the continued spate of vehicular accidents damaging the country’s electrical infrastructure and putting lives at risk.
The latest incident occurred at around 21:00hrs on Tuesday along the Hope Lowland Public Road, East Coast Demerara, when a black Nissan Juke reportedly crashed into a utility pole while travelling east. According to GPL, the impact broke the pole, causing it to fall across the roadway. Approximately 400 feet of service line and a street light were also damaged.
The vehicle reportedly left the scene before GPL personnel and Guyana Police Force ranks arrived. GPL subsequently reported the matter at the Cove and John Police Station and said it is working with the Guyana Police Force as the investigation continues.
The company’s Transmission and Distribution team has since commenced remedial works to repair the damaged infrastructure. GPL said it is “deeply concerned” about the continued occurrence of vehicular accidents involving its electrical infrastructure, warning that such collisions can have potentially grave consequences.
“Collisions involving utility poles and other electrical infrastructure can result in severe injury or loss of life, while simultaneously causing extensive damage to the electricity network and service interruptions affecting thousands of customers,” the company said.
GPL added that such incidents also expose its employees, motorists, emergency responders and members of the public to dangerous electrical hazards. The company is therefore urging motorists to exercise greater care and caution while using the nation’s roads. GPL also reminded drivers that leaving the scene after an accident involving electrical infrastructure does not remove the safety risks created by the damage.
“Damaged or fallen electrical infrastructure should always be treated as dangerous,” the company warned. GPL said it remains committed to maintaining a safe and reliable electricity network and will continue working with the Guyana Police Force and other relevant authorities when such incidents occur.
