Kaieteur News- Guyana on Sunday marked 60 years as a member of the United Nations, reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism, international law, peace and the principles of the UN Charter.
On September 20, 1966, during the 21st session of the UN General Assembly, Guyana was admitted as a Member State by acclamation, months after gaining independence.
In a statement government said, Guyana a newly independent nation at the time expressed its determination to be “an active rather than a sleeping member” of the international organisation.
The Government said that commitment has remained a defining feature of Guyana’s foreign policy, with the country playing an active role in issues ranging from decolonisation and apartheid to disarmament, development, human rights and climate change.
From the early years of its UN membership, Guyana was entrusted with leadership responsibilities, including membership of the Council for Namibia, which was tasked with completing the decolonisation process in that territory. Guyana has also served in several major UN organs, including the Security Council, General Assembly and Economic and Social Council. Guyanese representatives have also served on the International Court of Justice, the Human Rights Committee and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
The country has twice chaired the Group of 77 and China, the main grouping of developing countries at the United Nations. The Government said Guyana has consistently advocated for sovereign equality, self-determination, peaceful settlement of disputes and people-centred development, while also championing international action on climate change.
As Guyana observes its 60th year of UN membership, the country has nominated former Foreign Affairs Minister and Ambassador to the United Nations, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, for the position of UN Secretary-General. The Government described the nomination as a demonstration of Guyana’s continued belief in the UN and its ideals, as well as the principle that all member states, regardless of size, should have equal opportunities to serve the organisation.
Guyana also expressed appreciation for the support provided by the United Nations and its country team in advancing peace, development and democracy. The Government said it remains committed to the UN Charter and international law and will continue to work with the organisation in the global pursuit of peace and prosperity.
