Authorities hunt for New Amsterdam Prison escapee
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) is working with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to apprehend a convicted prisoner who escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison on Monday.
The GPS on Tuesday reported that Budnarine Persaud escaped from legal custody at approximately 13:00hrs on 21st September, 2026.
Persaud, who was sentenced to 24 months in prison for simple larceny, was working at the New Administrative Building with three other inmates under the supervision of a prison officer when he escaped.
An investigation into the incident has since been launched, and the GPS said all parties found to have neglected their duties will be held accountable.
Persaud was scheduled to be released on 5th November, 2027. His last known address is Lot 101, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
The prison service said it is working closely with the GPF to apprehend Persaud as soon as possible.
Anyone with information that may lead to his recapture is asked to contact the nearest police station, the Office of the Director of Prisons on 225-6003, or the Officer-in-Charge of the New Amsterdam Prison on 627-6215.
The public is reminded that harbouring or otherwise assisting an escaped prisoner is a criminal offence, the GPS stated.
