(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated on Friday revealed that it has removed 400 illegal connections from Coverden, East Bank Demerara.
In a statement, the company said its loss reduction department, conducted an exercise in the area, to identify and remove illegal electricity connections, it was during this operation that the illegal connections were discovered and removed.
“Coverden is the fourth location targeted as part of GPL’s ongoing campaign to curb electricity theft as far as practically possible. Similar exercises will continue in communities across the country,” GPL said.
On August 21, this publication reported that GPL stepped up its fight against electricity theft, conducting an enforcement exercise in a section of Sophia on Thursday to identify and remove illegal connections from the national power network.
The company reminded that illegal connections put additional pressure on transformers, feeders and other critical parts of the electricity network and can overload transformers and feeders. This can lead to overloaded equipment, equipment failure and power disruptions, affecting customers who are legally connected.
GPL warned that electricity theft is a criminal offence and said anyone found illegally tapping into the network will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The company said illegal connections pose a serious threat to lives and property, increasing the risk of electrocution, fires, serious injuries and death.
GPL is urging residents to report suspected electricity theft through its hotline at 226-2600, toll-free at 0475, or via WhatsApp at 699-4882. Electricity theft is dangerous. Don’t risk your life—or the lives of others. Report it.
